The computer can not connect to the iPhone / iPod with Wi Fi

I found a possible cause of connection problems on some devices.

I'm finishing the new version of the Application where I have fixed the issue.

The new version will be universal app and it will work natively with the iPad with new features.

If the address of your link does not work and the computer can not connect to the iPhone / iPod, try this workaround to solve the problem

On your iPhone, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi networks and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.

If you aren’t already connected to a wireless network, do so now.

Tap the blue arrow at the right hand side of the network.

You’ll be able to find your IP address on the resulting screen of network specifics.

See the IP Address and replaced as the link in your browser.

IE in my example (look at the picture below) the new link will be:

http://192.168.1.2:8080

In this example the Wi Fi network is named 'iPhone Network'

In questo post vorrei aiutare gli utenti Italiani che desiderano avere nella versione full del programma, il database delle ricette della versione free.

Il database della versione free deriva da una raccolta libera di ricette (www.dbricette.it) e non mi sembrava giusto incorporarla nel programma a pagamento. Questo non toglie che sia possibile trasferirne il contenuto.

La procedura descritta in seguito, ripristina una copia del database di 25600 ricette sovrascrivendo quello presente nella versione a pagamento dell'applicazione che è inizialmente vuoto.

Serve un PC con un web browser (Firefox, Safari o Internet Explorer) e una rete locale Wi-Fi.

Il PC e l'iPhone devono essere nella stessa rete locale Wi-Fi.

Bisogna scaricare sul proprio PC il file del database che si trova nel seguente link:

Aprire l'Applicazione sull'iPhone e premere l'icona in basso a sinistra.

Se il collegamento e' stabilito dovrebbe comparire una pagina simile a questa (in Italiano naturalmente)

Nota bene: il link potrebbe essere diverso, dipende dalla configurazione della rete.
Lasciare la schermata aperta e eseguire il browser sul PC riportando il link come mostrato nella pagina dell'iPhone (ricordarsi di scrivere tutto il link compreso http:// all'inizio e :8080 alla fine) es:

Se tutto è andato bene nel browser si aprirà la pagina che mostrerà il contenuto della Applicazione come se si trattasse di un sito web.
In alto nel menu bisogna scegliere Backup Restore

Poi selezionare il file HandyCookB.zip precedentemente scaricato e inviare il file

Non interrompere l'applicazione mentre sta trasferendo il file, è normale che impieghi un po' di tempo, il file è di 8 Mbyte.
Al termine dovrebbe comparire una schermata come questa:

A questo punto il file può essere ripristinato premendo il pulsante 'Ripristina da file di backup'. Anche in questo caso l'operazione richiede qualche decina di secondi ed è meglio non interrompere.
Al termine tutte le 25600 ricette saranno installate.

New ways to choose a category name for your recipes

There is a new combo box selection on the ‘Import’ page. Before you submit an mxp or mmf file, you can select the category destination where the recipes will be stored, or create a new category.

Selection options

a) 'Imported recipes' the recipes will be stored in a category called 'Imported recipes'

b) '‘Original category recipe’ - the recipes will be stored in their original, pre-imported category

c) You can select one of the categories already in Handy Cookbook

Requirement

The web inteface makes use of the WiFi networking capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch to view, edit, insert and backup the recipes with a desktop computer.

All the recipes are stored in the device.

Before you can use the web interface, you will have to connect both your mobile device, and the computer, to the same WiFi network.

You can use the PC with the web browser like Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer 7-8 (with some limitation on the length of text inserted)

It is not required internet access.

Connection

From the main screen of the App tap the icon

The App will show a page like this:

Leave this page opened during the connection.

Go to on your PC and open you preferred browser.

Type the link in the browser exactly as you can see in the iPhone page

Troubleshooting

The iPhone and the your computer must share the same access point. They need to be on the same sub-net.

Type in the "http://" part of the URL provided for Wi-Fi Connect. Some browsers (such as Internet Explorer) may not accept the address with out the "http://". Type also :8080 at the end.

Make sure that your phone does not "go to sleep" and disconnect from the network during the connection. If your phone goes to sleep, then the Wi-Fi connection will be lost.

Try to disable the firewall on your computer.

There appears to be a limit in the text length can be sent with Internet Explorer (for HTTP GET protocol). If You have some problem to import a long recipe with IE, try to use Mozilla Firefox.

Sembra esserci un problema di lunghezza del testo che può essere inviato con Internet Explorer (il limite sembra sul comando GET del protocollo HTTP). Se avete difficoltà ad inserire ricette con lunghe descrizioni provate ad usare Mozilla Firefox.

the 1.5 version has been tested with all the beta of firmware 3.0.
The App will be submitted to Apple only when I'm reasonably sure that is stable.

The development of the App go ahead.
There are many news in the next major version.
The web interface will be enhanced with this features:
- browsing the recipes and the categories
- full editing of the recipe also with the image insertion
- backup and restore of all the database
- print of the recipes

The testing are in course with the localization of the new pages.

About 1.4.1 version BUG

I'm very sorry, a stupid bug are in the switch of 'use fraction in quantity'.

I will release immediatly a new version without the issue.

The Apple employs about a week to approve and insert the update in the store.

You can insert the recipes that are shown with the decimal but in the next release will be automatically converted to fraction by the program (i.e. 1.5 -> 1 1/2).

Sorry for the issue.

I have some users who have reported connection problem with the wi-fi network.
The network configurations are very different and for understand the issue I need to know some information like the hardware (mac or pc) the OS (windows XP, Vista, Mac OSX) and also, if you can, the type of network (example router at home, access point public or at work etc).

I have a little suggestion: verify that the IP address shown for the iPhone is the same that you have in the iPhone configuration.
You can find your IP address going to
Settings > Wi-Fi > 'your network' > DHCP see the IP
Address (something like 192.168.x.x)

Insert http://ipaddress:8080 in your browser witht :8080 at the end.
For example if the address are 192.168.1.5 insert in the web browser

http://192.168.1.5:8080

I have found a bug in version 1.3 that in some case can hang the app when a is recipe is sended.
I think to release a fix in short time.

I have received many suggestion for improve the app.
I would like to inform you about the news in the next version.
In the application will be possible manage the categories and will be editable.
I'm testing the app for the compatibility with the iPod Touch.
I will try to change the icons whit better images (I have read your review Squiggle_838 from UK) and hope that the look and feel of the app will be better.
I don't know the time of release but I'm working to end as soon as possible.

Thanks to your requests have been made some improvements.

- You can use the fraction in the quantity, for example: 3 1/3. The program converts all the decimal in number in more closest fraction.
The calculation may not be accurate when you change the number of servings. The standard fractions used are: 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, and also 1/16, 3/8, 5/8 and 7/8.

- The program accept the recipe insertion from a personal computer with a web interface. The connection are made with a WiFi network and need a web browser like Safari, Firefox etc.
Simply enable the connection pressing the button in the main screen and read the instruction that will show.
